REORDER PARAGRAPH TIPS:
- Quickly slide through each of the paragraphs to get the main idea of the topic.
- Identify the opening or closing sentence of the topic or main idea.
- Note: however, but, nevertheless can not start a paragraph. These words present a different idea than the main idea of the topic.
- Identify reference words like personal pronouns (I, she, it, we) to get a link either backward or forwards to things in the text.
- Look for any obvious order sequence like firstly. finally, in the end etc.
- Keep track of your time using the on-screen timer.
REORDER PARAGRAPH QUESTIONS (With Explanation):
The sentences, each labeled with a letter have been placed in a random order. Choose the most logical order of sentences.
RE-ORDER PARAGRAPH 1:
A. Van Gogh, particularly in his later paintings, creates a thick swirl of paint which perhaps mirrors the emotional storm raging within.
B. DuFevre piles the paint onto the canvas in thick swatches which rise off the canvas by a good half inch at times.
C. Perhaps the most telling similarity between Van Gogh and DuFevre, the little-known modern surrealist, lies in their use of brushstrokes.
D. It is almost as if he is challenging Van Gogh to a contest to determine who was more emotionally disturbed.
SOLUTION & EXPLANATION:
The correct sequence is CABD. Figure out which of the sentences ought to come first or last. In this case, we are looking for an opening sentence as its a topic of two surrealists, Van Gogh and DuFevre. Either sentence A or C can be the opening sentence. Look for obvious clues to the logical order or chronology of events like 'Perhaps' in this example.
The sentence talks about the similarities between two surrealists, Van Gogh and DuFevre. Sentence B and sentence D form a group. The "he" in the sentence D can only relate to "Du Fevre". Sentence A can be accommodated after C and before the paragraph talked about "DuFevre" so the most logical sequence is CABD.
RE-ORDER PARAGRAPH 2:
A. Each week, a new “teleplay” was created from scratch-written, cast, rehearsed and performed.
B. Playhouse 90 was truly a remarkable training ground for the young talents.
C. Such future luminaries as Paddy Chayefsky, Marlon Brando, and Patricia Neal worked long hours honing their craft.
D. In some cases, when there were problems with the censors, it would have to be created twice.
SOLUTION & EXPLANATION:
The correct sequence is BCAD. Look for some relationship between any two paragraphs. Sentence B and sentence C are forming the most logical order. So we will keep BC as the obvious group. "In some cases" in sentence D follows sentence A, which talked about "teleplay". With this sentence, A and D forms a logical group. From all the 4 texts, sentence B can be the opening sentence as it provides the title information that forms the rest of the paragraph.
RE-ORDER PARAGRAPH 3:
Direction: Choose the most appropriate order of sentences out of the given options.
A. This is prime tiger country.
B. Late March in Ranthambore, the world is all sunshine, crisp air and flowering tress.
C. But in the late 1990s, tigers vanished from this open, rugged scrubland along the Aravallis.
D. Today, in an ambitious conservation step, work is on here at a frenetic pace to bring back the Lord of the Jungle.
SOLUTION & EXPLANATION:
BACD is the possible sequence. After reading the lines, we identify statement B as the opening sentence. "This" in the sentence A refers to "Ranthambore" so A is the 2nd text following B. "But" in the C sentence signals restriction described in a previous sentence. Sentence C presents the counter idea expressed by sentence A. Sentence D is the closing sentence as it concludes the paragraph by describing step has been taken to bring back the Lord of the Jungle.
RE-ORDER PARAGRAPH 4:
A. The 1971 War changed the political geography of the subcontinent.
B. Despite the significance of the event, there have been no serious books written about the conflict.
C. 'Surrender at Dacca' aims to fill the gap.
D. It also profoundly alerted the geo-strategic equations in South-East Asia.
SOLUTION & EXPLANATION:
ADBC is the right sequence. We identify statement A as the opening sentence. "The 1971 War" gives us the required introduction of the topic of this paragraph. "It" in statement D refers to "war" mentioned in statement A so it fills 2nd text box after A. "Despite" in statement B signals negation of the idea described in previous sentences. Statement C is the closing sentence with an example of such a book which statement B wave about.
RE-ORDER PARAGRAPH 5:
A. Normally, falling oil prices would boost global growth. This time, though, matters are less clear cut.
B. If the source of weakness is financial (debt overhangs and so on), then cheaper oil may not boost growth all that much: consumers may simply use the gains to pay down their debts.
C. On the other hand, if plentiful supply is driving prices down, that is potentially better news: cheaper oil should eventually boost spending in the world’s biggest economies.
D. The big economic question is whether lower prices reflect weak demand or have been caused by a surge in the supply of crude.
E. If weak demand is the culprit, that is worrying: it suggests the oil price is a symptom of weakening growth.
F. Indeed, in some countries, cheaper oil may even make matters worse by increasing the risk of deflation.
SOLUTION & EXPLANATION:
ADEBFC is the correct sequence. Sentence A gave the paragraph its required title information so is clearly the opening sentence. Sentence D form a logical group with A as it follows the idea. Sentence E presented one of the two "big economic question" asked in sentence D and sentence B presented 2nd. "Indeed" in sentence F confirm and amplify previous statements. "On the other hand" in sentence C presents an opposing opinion while concluding the paragraph so statement C is our closing sentence and fills 6th text box.
